After arriving in Taichung, we realized that we should have allocated more days here! We only allocated 3 days 2 nights at Tai Chung, and the first night we arrived there at 7pm. 🙁 So here are some of the things to do if you have very limited time!
1. Eat Taiwan Traditional Breakfast
In Taiwan, breakfast is a big deal, hence many shops cater for the people. ‘Zao Chan Dian’ (Breakfast shop) are small, with limited tables and chairs as most customers do take outs. Famous breakfast items include egg pancake, you tiao (deep fried dough) and soymilk drink.
2. Line up an hour for this fantastic Gelato at Dawncake (Miyahara) 宮原眼科
This amazing bowl of gelato made us waited for almost an hour.
1 scoop: 90NT2 scoops: 150NT3 scoops: 225NT4 scoops: 480NT
The price is not that cheap, but worth it. It comes with free toppings too depending on the scoops that you choose. And if you want to add biscuit bowl like the above, it’s an additional 20NT hehehe.
But no queue is going to stop us for having the gelato! They have 10 different type of chocolate flavours, and it starts from 40% dark chocolate to 100%. Fuh! And if you travel in a group, while the rest line up, you can sneak into Dawncake shop and marvel at their interior design.
Holyyy. Get your Suncakes as souvenirs here!
20, Zhongshan Road,
You won’t miss this place as it is right opposite Taichung Railway Station. 🙂
3. Bask in the Colorful World of Rainbow Family Village
Located at the outskirts of Taichung, Grandpa Rainbow painted a village with his whimsical style to protect it from being demolished by the government. It is said that Grandpa Rainbow is still staying that at very village, whom he cherished since the 1950s. If you are lucky, you get to meet him in person. We were not that fortunate that day.
Dozens of locals and tourists visit Rainbow Village, admiring the work of Grandpa Rainbow. The entire village, including the hidden places was painted by Grandpa Rainbow for years. 🙂
Even Ironman wants to be part of this wonderful little village!
From Taichung Train Station:Take either bus 27, 40, 30 to Lingdongsan station, then walk to Ganchen 6 Village.
4. Eat and shop till you drop at Feng Chia Night Market
Wondering if there’s any night markets to go, we asked the owner of our backpackers. He told us to go to Feng-Chia Night Market, which is Taichung’s most famous night markets. It is located right next to Feng-Chia University, and is a one stop hub for food, clothes and mobile accessories.
International brands are also available if you are not into buying off the streets heh.
Feng Chia Night Market
To get hereTake bus 25 or bus 35 to Feng Chia University stop, or alternatively take the cab. 🙂
5. Take Some Pictures at Tai Chung Station
If you are ever taking the train back to Taipei, go earlier and take some pictures at the historical Tai Chung Station! Its architecture goes back when the Japanese were in Taiwan, and is still preserved till today.
After spending 2.5 days in Taichung, we then took the train back to Taipei! We did not opt for the high speed rail and took a normal train back. The journey back took us 3 hours.
Taipei is an awesome city, and I cannot wait to update on the fun stuff there! 😀
